What is Dementia Care Training?

The Dementia Care Training program provides comprehensive education for healthcare providers about best practices in dementia care. Learn the theory and practice of U-First!®, PIECES™, Positive Approach to Care®, DementiAbility, and LGBTQ2S+ perspectives.In-person and virtual training options are available. 

    Course Overview

    The Dementia Care Training (DCT) program is composed of two courses:

    1. Dementia Care Training 101: Essentials of Alzheimer's Disease & Dementia
    2. Dementia Care Training 102: Advanced Fundamentals of Care

    Each course will provide and enhance your knowledge and awareness of dementia, increase your effective communication strategies, and allow you to practice hands-on skills which will enable you to provide quality care for persons with dementia. Learners will receive a U-First!® wheel, e-handouts, and access to additional resources on the U-First!® website.

    Dementia Care Training 101: Essentials of Alzheimer's Disease & Dementia

    For: Administrative staff, managers/coordinators, Clinical & direct care staff

    With weekly online modules and discussions, you will learn about Alzheimer’s and other dementias: the different types, their impact on the brain and day to day functioning, the progression of illness, changes in communication and behaviour, person-centred language, the importance of support for families, and services offered by ASPEI. Includes certification in U-First!® & DCT 101.

    Time commitment: 2 hours/week for 6 weeks + one 1-Hour Live discussion Webinar

    A certificate will be provided upon completion of the course.

    Dementia Care Training 102: Advanced Fundamentals of Care

    *DCT 101 is a pre-requisite for DCT 102

    For: Managers/coordinators, clinical, and direct care staff

    Expands into the advanced theoretical knowledge and hands-on skills needed to provide front-line high quality dementia care.

    These modules have their foundations in Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach to Care®, DementiAbility, and includes considerations for LGBTQ2S+ approaches to care. There is a strong emphasis on techniques to foster positive interactions between providers and persons living with dementia, including responsive behaviour applications and supports.

    Time commitment: 6 hours of online modules to be completed within a 6-week period + one 3-hour in-person session for practicum and certification

    Certification in DCT 102 provided upon completion.
